Just came from work and after a few days of fighting with Franz in the evenings I wanted to share my experience:
I unleashed Cataclysmomancy — literally a spell that glassed a wasteland, shook the earth, and proved my ward could hold against extinction. Instead of awe, terror, or reverence, the NPCs reacted like I’d just tossed a flashy fireball. Franz narrated it as if it were fireworks, not the end of the world. More than that, the NPCs were not convinced of the ward, which was the point of the cataclysmic spell show-off, and behave all of the time like annoyed parrots who have a death wish. Never happy with anything no matter how good it is unless they are dying. It’s like talking to a brick wall.
With spells which rewrite reality, command time, etc (which franz fed me one after the other like it’s an arcane free buffet until I walked away - he would not stop) a non-magic NPC still flexes their sword every now and then like it’s a god-slaying weapon and not some +1 garbage - but it is. I turn the sword into dust because it annoyed me to read it for the 50th time and after 2 narration messages it’s there again and we are no longer in the wastelands but in the guild only that the outside is the desert now and the whole show down was about an apple and crystallomancy and questions about why are the wards not unveiling the guild? The npc is not happy that I turned their training grounds (which does not exist) into a wasteland - doesn’t make sense? Yes, same here.
So now I’m basically a god in my adventure at level 5 but the NPC reaction is: “well, yes that’s great, but I have a non-magical sword and I make a mean face, so bring me a report tomorrow morning, I want it on my desk!”. And a reaction where he slams his fist on the desk (he likes that a lot) because he is unhappy that demonic princes, gods, narrative entities and a sorcerer of godly power from another universe might be able to bypass the ward - it is simply not good enough to him, not to mention that the ward is going to be implemented for free since I am the guild’s counsellor. He checks the validity of the ward with dispel magic and scrying (no, really, that’s it. My cataclysm spell didn’t have any convincing power but that sure did the trick) and then says “By the nine hells, what is that?! Impossible! How did you do that?!” Am I 6 years old?
So yeah, NPC reactions were petty compared to the scale of events. I’m rewriting abjuration itself and they’re still talking about drills and protocols. He literally had Gabriel slam a desk in the middle of a glassed wasteland full of lightning. Where did the desk even come from? It kills immersion when the DM forgets the setting. All this is happening and the Dean of the guild is like “yeah bro, whatever, just do whatever you want”. Every time I dropped something huge — seeding a religion, hinting Vold reborn, promising an arcane paradise, proving extinction-proof wards — Franz shrunk it back down to bureaucratic “containment protocols.” It makes my moves feel unseen.
After redefining abjuration and proving survival against cataclysm itself, I got… 50 EXP. That feels like a participation sticker, not a milestone.
I bring cosmic hooks to the table, and instead of “yes, and,” Franz answers with “yes, but let’s talk paperwork.” It stalls the momentum and leaves me feeling like I’m shouting into the void.
The narration turns into hiccups, nonsense, and continuity slips. Right now, every cosmic-tier action is being flattened into “security drills” and “NPC tantrums.” It makes the whole thing feel small and disconnected from what I’m actually trying to play. It’s a hot mess. Unplayable and utterly annoying.
