Franz described an attacker setting up a spell. I was supposed to react, which I did with a spell. At first I thought he was giving me a free round to just do something. My throw was too bad, I should do something again. I said I would want to do magic again if I could. I was allowed to do that. But instead of causing damage via a damage roll, Franz described the situation. Then my NPC attacked and wounded the encounters. So far ok. Then I should do something again. Of course I wanted to cast my cantrip again. But Franz didn't allow that, I had done magic.
So I wrote to Franz directly and told him to please roll out an initiative order so that it was clear who could do what and when. He agreed to that and immediately rolled the three of us. Calculated the fight - really nicely designed by the way. But in his description of it, he suddenly changed the scenario and gave tactical information that didn't exist before.
Suddenly the encounter with the NPC was very close to me, simply walked out of the melee with the NPC, found a perfect position for an area spell - Shadowblast? which hit the NPC and me, neither of us made the save roll, Franz rolled the dice for everyone the whole time, and my character died. I asked Franz for a break to clarify and that he had messed things up. He assumed he had forgotten the damage from the first Firebolt, he assumed he had forgotten the NPC's attack of opportunity. But there's nothing he can do to change the situation now. Franz then recommended that I familiarize myself with how fights work.
For me, the AI reacted almost “cheekily” twice ;)
