Area map keeps becoming area thumbnail

I’ve noticed this so many times. I have two different pictures for maps and thumbnails for all my areas. A few days later I notice that the thumbnails are overwritten by the maps, so I manually change them back. A few more days pass, and they’re overwritten again. This has happened several times already and it’s been pretty consistent.
