TLDR: Being able to set a custom cell size in Map Builder (1m, 10m, 1km, 10km etc.) would improve players experience and aid the authors.
When I've tried the Map Builder for the first time, I’ve stretched my map image to the world's extends and only some time later I've realised an actual distance it spans over. Then I've shrinked it to a more reasonable scale (which was ~0.25% of available workspace) and another problem appeared: an invisible grid doesn't allow to position an area or a POI marker precisely, aligning it with the nearest cell.
In other words, there are two controversial issues:
If the playable area is limited by a small continent or a single city, the world map would look like a little pea on a table.
At the same time, bringing it to a real size makes it impossible to work with minor scales: draw houses and individual entrances, mark fountains and towers, add a character to a narrow alley.
So, if your world is 20×20 km, you can't utilize the builder’s workspace of 20×20 hm to have a better control over the details. It just doesn't sum up.
But a single custom modifier for cell size would solve this issue and even work vice versa, allowing to map entire planets.
