I think 3 main updates are needed to the map system. The first is custom distances, being able to adjust the travel time per unit in an area and the default travel time per unit for the world. This would allow non-linear map design, where you have a detailed dungeon that takes up a quarter of the map, but it's actually small inside because the scale is different, and the path to the dungeon is really small on the map, but is 10 times larger than the dungeon actually is altogether.
The second is region types. For instance, a mountainous region should take something like twice as long to walk through, the same fly/burrow time as normal, and no possibility to swim through. A small body of water should have normal swim/fly time, and burrowing/walking should be impossible. A Space/Ocean region should be impassable except through specialized craft.
This would prevent Franz from navigating you as you walk half an hour through space to a POI on another planet in spacefaring worlds, or walking over an ocean to a nearby continent.
The 3rd change would be a default world area. When making a world, if you are not in another location, you are in the default area. This would let you define the world region as "Ocean/Space" making it impassable except through vehicles, and make Islands/planets as the areas. Or "Forest", meaning any non-specific area is unsettled wilds.
This wouldn't be an area itself, but communicate to Franz that this undefined area is an ocean or the cold vacuum of space, or whatever you set it as. It might generate islands, ships, underwater temples, or continents in an ocean, or planets, moons, space stations and asteroids in space.
