Franz story confusion

Franz seems to regularly get confused about the current storyline.

I accepted a quest to escort some people through the woods. I took on another person to help. On the way to the quest the person who I took on to help suddenly has a revelation that we can save his father from goblins. Halfway through fighting that group of goblins Franz completely abandons the quest and some guy named Thalen shows up that knows nothing about the goblin corpses completely surrounding us and points us in another direction. The guy whose father we were meant to be saving from the goblins then gets mad at me because I’m questioning Thalen about where the father is and why he was around all these goblins.

Franz seems to have given up on multiple quests partway through just to force me down a different quest. I would just like to finish a questline.
